Have you ever had a love for something but never persued it? Well that kind of sums up my journey as a photographer and more so a surf photographer. As a young teenage school boy, I used to marvel at each edition of Surfer, Surfing and Zig Zag magazine. I would immerse myself in the pages studying every image. Unlike most of my surfing friends , I would pay attention to who the surfer was, where it was taken and importantly WHO took the shot.
I had this desire to do the same, get out into the world and try and capture the beauty of waves, the ocean and surfing for myself. My desire was soon to be stomped out as being outlandish and that one could not make a living out of it.
It took more than 30 years before I purchased a camera and started shooting, learning and trying to carve out my own style as a lensman. Each session is a new learning curve. My philosophy is a simple one – shoot what I like and if others like what i capture too then its a bonus. Photography is an artform, a means of expression. To me an image is not just a photograph, its a “freezing of time” – we can all draw our own story out of them , and for those that were there at the moment, its a reminder of what was……….
